Earth Day 2025: Small Actions, Big Impact

Every April 22nd, people around the world come together for Earth Day — a moment to celebrate our planet and recommit to protecting it. But beyond the events and clean-up projects, Earth Day is also an opportunity to reflect: How do our everyday choices shape the future of our environment?

This year, we're diving into the ripple effect and exploring how small, simple actions can lead to meaningful, long-term change for our planet and our communities.

The Ripple Effect of Everyday Sustainability

When we think about helping the environment, it’s easy to picture sweeping reforms or major initiatives. But lasting change often starts at home with the choices we make each day.

Here are a few powerful examples of how individual and community actions add up:

  1. Reusable Choices → Less Waste in Landfills
Swapping single-use plastic for a reusable water bottle might seem small, but if 1,000 Utahns made that switch, it could prevent over 500,000 plastic bottles from ending up in our landfills each year.
  2. Composting at Home → Healthier Soils and Lower Emissions
Food waste in landfills produces methane — a potent greenhouse gas. Composting scraps instead helps enrich soil and reduces emissions. Imagine the impact if every household in Utah composted just 10% of their food waste.
  3. Local Volunteering → Stronger, Cleaner Communities
From restoring trails to removing invasive species, community service projects protect our landscapes and connect us with our neighbors. A few hours of volunteering can mean safer habitats, healthier ecosystems, and a more resilient Utah. Unsure of where to find opportunities? Visit

Earth Day is Just the Beginning

Looking to take action this Earth Day? Start small. Choose one sustainable habit to adopt — bike to work, plant native species in your yard, support a local farmers market, or pick up litter on your next walk. Then invite a friend to join you. That’s how the ripple grows.

Want to go Bigger?

Consider serving with Utah's environmental AmeriCorps programs, such as the Utah Conservation Corps or Canyon Country Youth Corps. These programs offer hands-on opportunities to support public lands, preserve natural resources, and create lasting impact here in Utah.

Let’s Keep the Ripple Going

Earth Day isn’t just about one day of action — it’s about building a future where every day is a chance to care for our planet. However you choose to get involved, remember: Even the smallest drop can create waves.
