Let us introduce you to Thom Spencer, a Senior Companion volunteer extraordinaire in Brigham City. Thom is retired and loves to garden, but found an opportunity to get out of the house and give back to his community throughout the year. After seeing a posting about the need for volunteers in his utility bill, Thom thought: “How am I going to feel in a few years when I am alone? I hope that when I’m at the point where I could use some company or a helping hand, there will be someone there for me.” Thom decided that while he is in good health, he wanted to serve those who need that companionship and help.

Thom shared that what he likes most about volunteering are the special relationships that develop. “I have benefited so much from the people that I work with. The things they are willing to share, their life experience over the years, their wisdom — it’s amazing.” When one gentleman was hesitant about receiving weekly visits, Thom discovered his client’s love for puzzles and for cats — and got a cat puzzle! Now the gentleman requests that Thom visits three times a week, an illustration of how their bond has grown.
Thom also serves a 93-year-old gentleman who has lost his eyesight, but not his greatest joy in life: reading. Thom shared: “With the gentleman I read to, he has told me several times, ‘There’s no way I can repay you. Your coming to read to me nourishes my intellect and my soul.’ He explained to me that in the south, when someone becomes dear to you, you call them ‘Uncle.’ And so now he calls me Uncle Thom.”
Thom says that if you choose to volunteer as a Senior Companion, “You’re going to develop friendships that you just can’t find any other way because you’re giving to somebody upfront. I think when they know that, there’s an openness that develops and a trust and a friendship. It’s really wonderful.”
