Education resources

Your term of service is the first step toward what’s next. These resources can help you translate your AmeriCorps experience into college credit, continue your education with financial support, and connect to Utah programs that guide you toward your career goals.

The amount of a full-time Segal AmeriCorps Education Award is equivalent to the maximum value of the Pell Grant for the fiscal year in which the term of national service is approved. The amount of the Pell Grant can change each year. Therefore, the amount of a full-time award can change. Once an individual earns an award, the dollar amount of that award will not change.

The Utah Board of Higher Education wants to provide students with more options to demonstrate college-level learning from their previous educational, work, or life experiences to help them complete their degree requirements as quickly as possible.

You can save time and money by earning college credit for what you already know from advanced high school coursework, work experience, military training, entrepreneurship, professional licensure, or volunteer work. To earn credit, that experience must relate to college-level knowledge, aligned with particular college classes that fall with your degree plan.

Forbearance is temporarily postponing your obligation to make payments on your student loan. As an AmeriCorps member you may be eligible for forbearance on your qualified student loans during your term of service. Forbearance is granted by the Financial Institution, not by AmeriCorps. During a period of forbearance, although you do not have to make payments, interest continues to accumulate on your loans. AmeriCorps will only pay this interest if the loans were placed in forbearance and you earned a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award. AmeriCorps pays this interest accrual benefit in addition to your Education Award. There is not a forbearance option if you chose the stipend as your end of service option.
