AmeriCorps Member of the Month – Susana Alba

September, 2020

Each month we recognize an AmeriCorps member serving in Utah for going above and beyond the pledge they took to “Get Things Done.” This month we are proud to recognize Susana Alba who is serving with the Utah Healthcare Corps (UHC), a program of the Association for Utah Community Health (AUCH).

Susana was born in San Juan, Argentina in 1955 and graduated as a Professor of Mathematics at the Universidad Nacional de San Juan in 1983. After obtaining her degree, she moved to Salt Lake City, Utah with her husband when he was hired by the University of Utah.

Susana strives to help her community with accessing health services and she has the dedication and determination to achieve that objective. Susana thoroughly enjoys her work and is always willing to learn while helping people less fortunate than her. Throughout the years, she has acquired multiple certificates of competence in topics such as case management, cancer survival, and medical interpretation.

Susana has worked as an English/Spanish interpreter, focusing on breast and cervical cancer for the Utah Cancer Control Program. She has worked as a Community Health Worker for Centro de la Familia and a Health Educator/Navigator for Alliance Community Services. Susana has received educational grants from the AVON Foundation and the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

Susana just began her third term of service with Family Healthcare in St. George, Utah. The Utah Healthcare Corps is elated that Susana has chosen to serve in their program for three years. She brings passion and a valuable perspective to every aspect of her role as a Community Health Worker (CHW). Susana’s dedication to helping others extends beyond her service with UHC – she contributes to her community in many capacities, such as serving as a Chair on the executive leadership of the CHW section of Utah Public Health Association.

Susana’s host site supervisor at Family Healthcare shared the following about her:

“Susana has been with us for two terms and is starting her third. I love Susana’s spirit. She is hard working, compassionate, trustworthy, and very down to earth. She communicates very well with our patients, who easily trust and open up to her. She is always finding resources and opportunities where she can serve and benefit the community. Susana is very productive and makes sure she closes the loop in any task she is assigned. She never says no and anything that I ask her to take on she does with a smile. Susana has been an asset to Family Healthcare and I am very grateful to have her on my team.”

We extend our congratulations to Susana for being recognized as the AmeriCorps Member of the Month and thank her for her dedicated service to Utah communities.
