THELMA SMITH HONORED WITH UTAH AMERICORPS SENIORS SERVICE AWARD

November, 2022

Thelma is 82 years old and has volunteered with the Utah County Senior Companion Program for 7 years. So far, she has served over 7800 hours with 17 client friends. Currently she doesn’t have any plans to slow down!

Thelma is very loyal, honest, and kind. She has a very gentle nature and a calming influence. She has a quick wit and a great chuckle. She is a great communicator with the ability to make those around her feel comfortable and important. She loves all her client friends and treats them as family.

She is also a great friend to the other Senior Companion volunteers. She often reaches out to check on her fellow volunteers to offers them support.

Thelma is currently serving a gentleman that is 18 years younger than her. It is a unique situation, but she doesn’t let this bother her. They have the greatest relationship and have a lot of fun together.

Thelma will tell you that being a Senior Companion has saved her life. “I was so lonely after my husband passed. Having someone to visit and get to help has helped keep me healthy and sane. I have met some sweet ladies and they have taught me so much. They have given me a new life.”

Thelma’s station coordinator says, “Thelma is a very special lady, always positive and always smiling. Thelma is a super Senior Companion. She goes the extra mile for her clients. Thelma is very much appreciated by everyone that knows her. She is very thoughtful and loving. She sets a high standard in every area.”

Thelma is an amazing volunteer and an outstanding person. Her joy for life is contagious.

Thank you Thelma!
